ANBERNIC RG 406H

It runs a ton of games at an incredible rate, the battery life is very sustainable, doesn’t overheat at all, and since it’s running on Android, I can play Hollow Knight and a few other games on it. Thank you, Anbernic, for a nice product! Teensy little problem, though, not much. The little silicone cover under the left joystick came off after I tried to put it in my pocket, and it doesn’t fit back on it the way it used to. Not sure if it’ll cause any problems in the future, but if it does, I’ll try to repair it my best, and if THAT doesn’t work, I’ll try to send it back to see what they can do(if they offer that service). Otherwise, great product, love it, wouldn’t change it!

I purchased the Transparent Purple model with the 256gb card.

First off, the ergonomics are great for this device. I did not anticipate how comfortable it feels in my hands.

The IPS screen is subjective depending on what games you want to emulate. And most retro games were intended to be played on a 4:3 aspect ratio. I personally was having good results playing some PSP games at 4x resolution with no hiccups.

The PS2 emulation isn’t perfect at higher resolutions but some of these games look just fine at 1x -1.5x resolution using the preinstalled emulators they have for you. The benefit of it being a device that runs with Android 13 helps out big time if you would like to remove those and install your own favorite emulator, and customize your library with your own games. This device also supports NFC so you could leverage that when you’re customizing your library.

Me personally, I don’t like having to do much tinkering. So for someone that’s just simply looking for something to pick up and play this device could be a winner.

Anbernic has their own front end game menu. You navigate in and out of that menu with their button. Doesn’t get in the way and it’s kind of nice (to me). I personally wish that I received more PS2 titles preinstalled on the SD card but this is still kind of picky because I already own the titles that I want to play. Aside from that it comes packed with MANY retro games I haven’t played in years. I’ve found myself playing this device almost every single day since I’ve purchased it. I had some great nostalgia playing this thing. I’ve had a blast customizing it to how I want my device to be. This was my first Anbernic purchase and it won’t be my last. I appreciate what Anbernic is doing in this realm of gaming. Very few companies in this market provide a true “plug and play” experience.

When getting this product I highly recommend only using the dedicated USB to USB-C cable that comes with it to charge the device. I also recommend connecting the device to WiFi and doing the OTA updates before you dive in.

It takes a little bit of time but aside from that…the ability to just open this product, turn it on, and just start start playing games with very little set up at this price point (to me) is fair for the price.

As a new fan of this product I would personally like to see the RG406H get a revision of this same ergonomic feel with a stronger chipset. A bigger battery that could supports fast charge. The sticks are great. The D-Pad is nice. If they threw in some OLED I wouldn’t complain. Thank you guys for building an awesome product and I hope to see the rebirth of this line of your handhelds. I’ll definitely be a buyer.

I absolutely love my RG406H it’s my new go-to devise for retro games. The one thing that holds it back are the load start, select, and front trigger buttons. The rest of the buttons are perfect which makes it more jarring to have some buttons not match the feel or sound. I swapped the joysticks for a GameCube esthetic. I would love to see a version like this with GameCube colored buttons as well.

The 406H is a solid handheld in the under $200 price tier. Good performance and a processor that can handle everything up to and including most PS2 games. Gaming on this device is very fun and makes old games feel like you're experiencing them for the first time. It also plays Wii and GameCube exceptionally well. The ergonomic design was clearly made with comfort in mind, and makes long gaming sessions very enjoyable. Many reviews and reviewers mention the tall joysticks as a negative, but they are conveniently placed, easy to use, and add to the overall comfort of the design.

First off, the 406 H feels unbelievably comfortable in my hands. I love the throwback transparent purple, the screen looks sharp, and all the buttons feel great.

My only gripe is that the hardware is not sufficient enough to run many of the most popular PS2 titles I wanted to play on it.

I exhausted all troubleshooting methods, and configuration optimizations, but most reviews online also state it just doesn't have the hardware necessary to run those titles smoothly.

Overall, it's a great machine and I highly recommend it for retro gaming. However, be warned that it will struggle with 6th generation games.

Easy yo install New Roms just Buy it

My order was stuck in customs for longer than expected. The Anbernic team was super supportive in the process and when it arrived they were just as happy as I was!
Setting up the device for optimal gameplay can take some time but there are plenty of online guides. I’m having a lot of fun with it and wish I could sent it back in time to my younger self!

Really great handheld at a great price point. Performance is great, is actually comfortable to hold for extended periods, screen is fantastic. Highly recommend.

I'm absolutely blown away by this device. The battery life is amazing and it's performance is top tier. It's worth every penny.

I purchased 2 units and received within 10-12 days

So far, I really like my 406H. It plays anything of asked of it up to GC level. LoZ: WW was playing at 2x resolution, but that had a significant slowdown during combat. Changing it to 1.5x helped significantly. In short, it can play them, and even improve it a little, but don't expect to be able to demand much more than that. One of the few frustrations was the inability to change files for ROM locations. Because I used my own SD card, I had to track down a copy of the file structure that normally came on standard Anbernic SDs that someone was kind enough to post, otherwise I couldn't get the emulation software to identify ROMs. The AI app is interesting but still pretty rough for the moment. Real time translation is a great idea, but most of the AI notifications use Chinese characters and so when something wouldn't work the way I wanted, I didn't know what it was trying to say. Ergonomically, the 406H isn't bad, not perfect, but comfortable enough for continuous play. It's also light enough that holding it wasn't tiresome. The touch screen, paired with the fact that it runs on an Android operating system, means that things are easy to use for people with experience. That also means that some mobile games are available, but even ones with controller support may not recognize the built-in controller (Diablo: Immortal for example). The sticks and buttons all feel good when using them, although the shoulder buttons are louder than seems necessary. The RGB function on the sticks can be turned on or off at the push of a button from the pull-down menu which is nice for people like me who feel like they might be little more than a gimmick that drains extra battery life. Since there were only 6 options available on the lights, they don't seem to be very well utilized anyway. An update that allows the RGB sticks to match color with the predominant screen color would be a cool addition, or even just a color wheel to be able to pick a static color would be nice. One other change that I would recommend is the location of the type-c port. Similar to the Switch, the type-c port is on the bottom, but without the reasoning of being able to put it on a dock. It's probably a limitation on the space available, but bottom charging ports get in the way of being able to rest it on a surface while playing, which isn't a huge deal with the relatively light weight, but is still inconvenient. Apart from generic third-party screen protectors and general-use hard cases, there isn't much available in the way of accessories. Even Anbernic only offers a hard case and that's it. No grips to improve the ergonomics more or anything like that. Not a deal breaker for me, but I'm trying to list everything I've come across as I've played with the 406H. This last bit isn't specific to the 406H, but when ordering, don't plan for it to ship out quickly, even ordering from the US. I had to wait about a week from placing the order to actually shipping. Overall, I think the 406H is a great device and delivers good value for its cost. I know I spent more time talking about negatives than positives, but they really are small things that I have noticed, not glaring issues that interfere with enjoyment. If you have the money to drop on one, the 406H can deliver a lot of enjoyment in a portable package.

P.S. Balatro on mobile is listed on the app store as being incompatible, which is a shame because it would be a great little system for it in my opinion. Don't know if it's a hardware limitation, but would love to see more mobile games with controller support on the 406H. ;D

The quality is there. I followed a online guide to remove and replace all the apps and add a front end.
Runs Gamecube pretty well, runs n64 super clean. Just as expected. lotta fun.
Battery life is solid.

Been a while watching videos on Youtube about Anbernic devices, and I was always interested in retro consoles, so I did a #YOLO purchase of this device. Trust me it does not disappoint as it works great and plays exactly what you would expect from it

I've had about 7 Anbernic handhelds over the years, and this is by far my favorite yet!

I used a lot since I buy it, if you are a fan of the Retro I 100% recommend, the thing that comes with games is a very nice extra! And also the fact that is Android convert in something flexible

I am absolutely floored with this handheld - just amazing all the way around. The buttons feel crisp and responsive, without feeling clicky. The stacked shoulder triggers are comfortable as heck. The console itself is comfortable to hold and play for extended periods of time. I ran with the stock emulators/front end and everything worked well - but installing specific emulators and ES-DE really made this shine. I expected some slow down on PS2 games - and I was pleasantly surprised that every game I wanted to play runs flawlessly. GameCube emulation is stellar as well. The battery life is very impressive. I really love the customizable colors on the joysticks - which is something I thought I could care less about. The video out with an USB to HDMI cable works excellently, as does connecting a Bluetooth controller for a second player (or to play wirelessly attached to the TV).

The best handheld in existence. The controls and placement of the RG406H is excellent and very comfortable. Capable of playing for hours without discomfort or cramping. Ps2 and gamecube games run excellent. As well some wii games! 1000% recommended my friend!

This device not only looks cool, but it has a nice feel in the hand. The graphics are great and the software is powerful enough for a great gaming experience. This is one of the best handheld on the market, no doubt. But for the price, you can't beat the quality

This is my first retro handheld device and it works fantastic. I did not get the preloaded SD card and downloaded everything from scratch and I have not run into any issues with any games. I can upscale a bunch of PS2 and psp games making the old titles look great! I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a sub 200 device.

I bought the RG406H for GC and PS2 emulation, and man, does it deliver! It takes a lot of time to set up if you start from scratch, but it's a worthy investment. I have 30 years with of gaming in the palm of my hand and I love it!

I have used several emulation handhelds, but had always stuck with Linux based operating systems. This was my first android device, and it's absolutely excellent. It might sound minor, but you can leave a game on standby on this thing and come back two days later to pick it back up. You'll only have lost a few percent of power, and you'll be right back where you were. It's an excellent device with good ergonomics, and the 4:3 screen is ideal for its intended use. If I had one complaint, it would be that the joystick caps are too easily removed - you may find yourself looking for replacements if you are not careful!

I was very much impressed by the quality and software optimization done on this device. The best purchase from Anbernic so far.

This thing is quite powerful for the size. I’ve been enjoying playing on my 406H. Emulates all the way up to PS2 and some switch games. I’m so happy I can play all my favorite childhood ps2 titles. 10/10!
