Pros:
- Lightweight. Roughly pocketable
- Feels good in the hands. Obviously not as comfortable as a full-sized controller, but I'm easily able to complete longer gaming sessions
- Front and shoulder buttons are clicky. The dpad isn't clicky, but still feels good to use.
- Trigger buttons are taller than the bumper buttons (they slope diagonally). Good design choice.
- Dual card slots allows one card for system updates leaving the other card untouched for ROMs and saves
- Comes with a screen protector you can apply yourself
- The USB-C port supports both data and charging functions. I tested it with a dongle and a USB keyboard.
- Dedicated menu button for pulling up Retroarch and dedicated volume and power controls
- Decent battery life and quick boot time
- Wifi support allows for Retroachievements and Netplay.
- Bluetooth allows wireless controllers for multiplayer. I'm using an 8bitdo Zero 2 for this.
- I haven't used it, but the RG35XX has a mini HDMI port for connecting to displays
Cons:
- Moving around the main menu is slow? Games and Retroarch have no issues though
- No OTA update still. You have to flash a 16gb img file to their 64gb stock sd card... and no I'm not downloading the 64gb img
- Similar idea, no support for a protocol like FTP to get files directly into the device without having to power-off and put the TF2 SD card into a computer
- No real sleep state. Shutting down is the best bet for saving power, but sadly you can't resume the last game on boot without using save states
- Claimed ogg support but only mp3 works as of writing this
- AUX port slightly defective already. Unfortunately, I didn't try it until after 15 days of receiving the device. It still works, but the aux cable needs to be wiggled out about 1 mm.
- I noticed another reviewer had the same issue as me: After selecting save slot n, if you try to save state, it will save to slot n+1
Conclusions:
I'd probably give this five stars despite the AUX issue (it's not the most important feature anyway) if the RG35XX had a better update process and the media support it promised. Despite the cons I listed, it really is a fun device.
I bought this for my wife and she really love this machine
I like mine it does need sum work and a new as card to get it working
Very happy with my purchase. My only complaint is that when saving a file to a save slot, it saves to the next slot instead of the one selected. Other than that, I'm really enjoying it!
Its powerful enough to play almost all my retro library. Fits in the pocket and the battery last forever.
